For those on a more limited schedule, or those who prefer a more deluxe safari experience – whether you are on your first safari, or a repeat visitor – we strongly recommend a stay at one of the several private game reserves straddling the national park. These exclusive reserves, running along the Kruger’s unfenced western borders, are home to the finest collection of lodges in Africa, and some of the finest game viewing as well.Everything at a private lodge is optimized for the ultimate safari experience: from the lush property and posh accommodations – even at the lower end of the scale – to outstanding cuisine, service and highly experienced guides and trackers on site.

Here, you will head out for your game drives in open-air vehicles, with the guides having complete freedom to drive off-road, through vegetation and riverbanks, to give you truly close-up encounters with wildlife. With guides constantly sharing sightings via radio with guides from their own camp as well as those from surrounding lodge properties, the chances of catching the best sightings are dramatically increased. While there is never a guarantee you’ll see all the animals you’d like, your odds of doing so here are as good as they will ever get: The only vehicles traversing the private reserves are those of the camps, so there’s none of the cars and crowds associated with sightings in the national park. If it’s the ultimate in animal viewings and proximity you are after, there’s simply no place better for animal viewings and proximity than the private reserves.

The private lodges also offer the best of African nightlife: the quiet settling in on the bush, spectacularly beautiful skies at sunset, the rare pleasure of enjoying sundowner refreshments in the bush, and watching wildlife stalk their prey. Just when you think it can’t get any better, weather permitting, you’ll return to your camp for a meal under the stars, around the fire, to share the day’s happenings with your fellow travelers.Rather than non-stop driving during the day – more or less the standard operating procedure in the Kruger – when many animals are sleeping and escaping the heat, you can spend your day in camp, relaxing by the pool, on your deck, in the main lodge, or in many cases, a spa, watching animals moseying on by the property from the comfort of your camp.

Private lodge room rates are more expensive than those at the national park and at other nearby accommodations – they can run from a few hundred dollars to over a thousand per night per person. But when considering that the cost per night includes all of your meals, guided game drives, superior accommodations, resort-like, open-air settings amidst African wildlife, the values-added can quickly start to balance out the price tag scales.Even for those with more time and flexibility for a Kruger visit, we recommend that you make at least part of your stay at a private reserve lodge.
